The common adage in the web world is that people don't read. You have roughly 7 to 10 seconds to capture a visitor's attention or they will be on to the next thing. So have you ever wondered, "is my blog post too long?"
It sounds a little trite to say, but your blog post will need to be as long as it needs to be. Don't worry so much about the length as whether it is good content or bad content.
Oh GREAT, you are thinking, now I have to worry about THAT too! But not really. Your knowledge and passion will show through in your writing as long as you let it. This is true, only if you do not restrict yourself by feeling a blog has to be a certain length.
Instead of being concerned about how long it is, here are a couple of questions you can ask yourself:
- Is my blog post helpful?
- Does it offer insight into a particular problem/interest/concern that people you know have?
- Better yet, are you writing about something you found that helped you overcome a challenge or an obstacle?
- Is my blog post something my readers will find interesting?
I tend to be very wordy -- really, check out some of my other blog posts. They tend to be quite long. I go into detail, and when ever possible supply facts to back up my statements, especially when writing how-to blog posts and topical blog posts on SEO, development, etc. Sometimes they are short, sweet and to the point.
The bottom line is simple. Write your blog and don't worry about the length. Just make sure you have a good hook to keep your readers interested.
